README - ULC UI Engine for VisualAge Smalltalk V5.5 - 04/04/00

The file ULCWUIE.exe is a self-extracting install program for installing the UI Engine
client for Windows. You would install this on your Windows client machines, and also on
your Windows development machine so that you can test your applications as you develop.

To install on your development machine, execute the file ULCWUie.exe. When prompted for
the directory to install, if your VisualAge root directory is not properly detected,
please install to the directory:

x:\vast

where: x:\vast is the path that VisualAge V5.5 is located.

To install on your client machines, execute the file ULCWUie.exe. When prompted for the
directory to install, please install to x:\your directory\ where x:\your directory\ is
any directory you wish.

During installation you will also be prompted for the location of your JRE installation
and swing classes to setup the UlcJRERoot and UlcSwingHome environment varialbles. The
directory you enter for the JRE is the root directory of your JRE installation. It is
assumed that the jre.exe file will be in the bin folder, which is a subdirectory in this
root directory. The directory you enter for your Swing classes is the directory where
your swingall.jar file is located.

This install program will create Shortcuts for starting the UI Engine in standard and
in monitor mode in a Program Group for you.

Also, it will set an environment variable for the UI Engine as follows:

      Set UlcUIHome=x:\VAST\ULC\UIEngine

Where: x:\vast is the path that VisualAge Smalltalk V5.0 in located, or where the
UI Engine was actually installed. This is used for the httpserver example.

Please note:
ULC as shipped requires JRE 1.2. However, JRE 1.1.7 International version and
Swing version 1.1.1 can be used also. Read the README.TXT in the UIENGINE directory
after installing. Since the available versions of the JRE and Swing are constantly changing,
you should check our web site - www.software.ibm.com/ad/smalltalk for updates or fixes,
and visit our news group at ibm.software.vasmalltalk for the latest information.
