                         Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our
fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a
                           professional astronomer.

Explanation: Across the heart of the Virgo Cluster of Galaxies [4] lies a
striking string of galaxies known as Markarian's Chain [5] . The chain,
pictured here [6] , is highlighted on the right with two large but featureless
lenticular [7] galaxies, M84 [8] and M86 [9] . Prominent to their lower left
is a pair of interacting galaxies known as The Eyes [10] . The home Virgo
Cluster [11] is the nearest cluster of galaxies [12] , contains over 2000
galaxies, and has a noticeable gravitational pull on the galaxies of the Local
Group of Galaxies [13] surrounding our Milky Way Galaxy [14] . The center
[15] of the Virgo Cluster [16] is located about 70 million light years [17]
away toward the constellation [18] of Virgo [19] . At least seven galaxies in
the chain appear to move coherently [20] , although others appear to be
superposed by chance.
