Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our
fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a
                           professional astronomer.

Explanation: What do spiral galaxies look like sideways? Featured is a sharp
telescopic view of a magnificent edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 3628 [7] , a puffy
galactic disk [8] divided by dark dust lanes. Of course, this deep galactic
portrait [9] puts some astronomers in mind [10] of its popular moniker, The
Hamburger Galaxy. The tantalizing island universe [11] is about 100,000
light-years across and 35 million light-year [12] s away in the northern
springtime constellation [13] Leo. NGC 3628 [14] shares its neighborhood in
the local Universe [15] with two other large spirals M65 [16] and M66 [17]
in a grouping otherwise known as the Leo Triplet [18] . Gravitational
interactions with [19] its cosmic neighbors are likely responsible for the
extended flare and warp [20] of this spiral's disk.
