                         Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our
fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a
                           professional astronomer.

Explanation: On rare occasions, the Earth and Moon are photographed together.
One of most spectacular times this occurred was 25 years ago this month when
the Jupiter-bound Galileo spacecraft [6] zoomed past our home planetary
system. Then, robotic Galileo watched from about 15-times the Earth-Moon [7]
separation as our only natural satellite [8] glided past our home world. The
featured video [9] combines 52 historic color-enhanced images [10] . Although
our Moon may appear small [11] next to the Earth [12] , no other planet in
our Solar System has a satellite [13] so [14] comparable [15] in [16] size
[17] . [18] The Sun [19] , far off to the right, illuminated about half of
each sphere, and shows the spinning Earth's white clouds [20] , blue oceans
[21] , and tan continents. Tonight, a nearly full Oak [22] supermoon [23]
will be visible from all of Earth from sunset to sunrise.
