                         Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our
fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a
                           professional astronomer.

Explanation: Stars are forming in the Soul of the Queen of Aethopia. More
specifically, a large star forming region called the Soul Nebula [8] can be
found in the direction of the constellation Cassiopeia [9] , who Greek
mythology credits as the vain wife [10] of a King who long ago ruled lands
[11] surrounding the upper Nile [12] river. The Soul Nebula [13] houses
several open clusters of stars [14] , a large radio source known as W5 [15] ,
and huge evacuated bubbles formed by the winds of young massive stars. Located
about 6,500 light years [16] away, the Soul Nebula spans about 100 light
years and is usually imaged next to [17] its celestial neighbor the Heart
Nebula [18] (IC 1805). The featured image [19] , impressively detailed, was
taken last month in several bands of infrared light [20] by the orbiting
Herschel Space Observatory [21] .
