APOD: 2017 August 28 - A Fleeting Double Eclipse of the Sun

                         Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our
fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a
                           professional astronomer.

Explanation: Last week, for a fraction of a second, the Sun was eclipsed
twice. One week ago today, many people in North America [4] were treated to a
standard, single, partial solar eclipse [5] . Fewer people, all congregated
along a narrow path, experienced the eerie daytime darkness [6] of a total
solar eclipse. A dedicated few with fast enough camera equipment, however,
were able to capture a double eclipse [7] -- a simultaneous partial eclipse
of the Sun [8] by both the Moon [9] and the International Space Station [10]
(ISS). The Earth-orbiting ISS [11] crossed the Sun in less than a second,
but to keep the ISS [12] from appearing blurry [13] , exposure times must be
less than 1/1000th of a second. The featured image composite captured the ISS
[14] multiple times in succession as it zipped across the face of the Sun [15]
. The picture was taken in a specific color [16] emitted by hydrogen [17]
which highlights the Sun's chromosphere [18] , a layer hotter and higher up
than the usually photographed photosphere [19] .
